Abstract:For most Arab financial institutions 1986 was a bad year. Assets were eroded, profits dropped, bad loans accumulated and investment values declined. And 1987 seems to be even worse. To collect the data of the top 100 Arab institution is made difficult by poor reporting standards. For example, NBK's hidden reserves are substantial. Another problem is the quality of assets. Take the $4 billion of Latin American debt. The ABC and GIB have really serious debt problems.
