Abstract: | There is a widespread claim that USA firms are unwillig or unable to make investments that are necessary for the future but that require a sacrifice of short term profits. This economic short termism places USA firms at a competitive disadvantage with respect to overseas competitors, particularly from Japan and Germany. The author presents a framework that addresses organizational and individual as well as economic perspectives. He reviews concepts, analysis and evidence, and suggests a cross-discipline, multilevel reserach agenda for understanding this vital topic. |
