Abstract: | This article investigates the relationship between mangerial change and team performance in English football. Studying the performance and turnover of football managers allows unique insights into the managerial function. Despite the lower levels of media and supporter scrutiny managerial turnover tends to be more rapid in the lower divisions. Managers with longer service are generally allowed more time to ride out a bad run of results. There is a distinct seasonal pattern to managerial changes. Managerial change seems to have a harmfull effect on team performance immediately following a termination. There is a natural tendency for results to improve after a poor run of results. Teams that change managers as a result of a poor spell do appear to benefit from this effect. |
