Abstract:Even though sustainability issues have been addressed by both ecologists and economists, the impact of reduced working hours on sustainability has not been discussed. This article argues that sustainability cannot be achieved only by green technologies when the U.S. consumption and lifestyle model is replicated everywhere. In the global North a successful path to sustainability can be obtained by reducing work time and therefore reducing consumption for even though the current level of income is highly valuated, the future income is valuated much less.
