Abstract:As the Sydney Opera House approached its 25th anniversary in the late 1990s, it faced many of the physical, attitudinal and logistical challenges - rooted in the assumption that performing arts centres are essentially venues for hire - that faced performing arts centres all over the world. It therefore embarked on a journey to transform itself from a venue for hire into a world-class performing arts centre. In this venture it earned the support and confidence of its stakeholders. Its vision of becoming a performing arts powerhouse offering an eclectic mix of contemporary art forms to diverse new audiences is now being realized. The new challenge for the Sydney Opera House is to continue attracting visitors and keep employees engaged and committed.
