Abstract:This article examines the under-representation of women at senior levels in academic employment. Theories suggesting factors that cause inequity are tested using a national survey of academic and general staff in 18 universities and a case study of academic staff at the University of New South Wales. The results show that domination of men at the senior levels cannot simply be explained by discrimination or bias in appointments, promotions or workloads. It is argued that the impact of household is important: the division of domestic labour btw. men and women, the needs of older children, and divorce or separation have significant effects on women´s career development.
