Abstract:Four high workplace performance models are outlined in the article. The first two models are (1) strategic human resource management and (2) organizational trust models, which both have enabling and supporting characteristics. The other two models are (3) labour process and (4) numerical flexibility models, which on the other hand motivate workers through intimidation. The authors have conducted a survey of Australian workers and compare the four models and their capacity in explaining workplace productivity. All models seem to some extents explain the productivity of workplaces, but surprisingly the numerical flexibility model had the most explanatory power. The authors conclude that this result derives from the attraction and ability of employers to use methods of this model in order to achieve higher productivity. Suggestions for future research are provided.
