Abstract:Australia is a sparsely populated country that is well endowed with energy resources. The size of both coal and uranium reserves relative to domestic demand has given the opportunity to become a major exporter of these two minerals. In addition, the development of natural gas fields promises to provide substantial supplies for export. In contrast, unless substantial additional deposits of crude oil are discovered and developed over the next few years, the current favorable trade balance with respect to petroleum products is likely to reverse itself relatively quickly over the next decade.
