Abstract:During the first three quarters of 1996 the economy expanded at above its potential growth rate of 2,25% per year, though demand growth eased over the summer. The unemployment rate has fallen out of the range where it had remained since late 1994. Private-sector wage growth has picked up slightly, but the effects on overall price inflation have been muted by slowing rises in non-wage labor costs and capital cost decreases, and core price inflation has again edged lower. The current account deficit has begun to widen once more but looks set to be little changed as a share of GDP for the year as a whole.
