Abstract:Self-determination theory (SDT) articulates the core principles that underlie the concept of sustainable motivation in organisations. Few understand how to successfully implement a SDT intervention in the face of organisational pressure for short-term accountability and performance. This article presents the core principles of SDT, describes the principles that underlie successful SDT-based interventions, proposes six steps that facilitate the creation of autonomous motivation, articulates the obstacles to successful implementation and presents two examples of successful organisational implementations.
