Abstract:The analysis presented in this article builds on and clarifies previous literature in the information technology field based on the transactions cost economics paradigm. A theory of the cost and benefits of cooperation in relation to transaction cost economics is described. The conceptual theory is used to investigate the role of informational technology in influencing cooperation. The authors believe that informational technology reduces coordination costs and transaction risk , although not necessarily to the same degree. It is suggested that reduction in transaction risk leads to greater reliance on use of outside agents to achieve economies of scale, scope, or specialization.
