| Abstract: | A three-year study of how ten companies implemented CAD/CAM systems shows what works and what doesn't and why companies that should know better still fail. Among the plethora of suggestions for advanced manufacturing technology (AMT) implementation, three rules stand out as the most necessary and powerful: develop an effective champion, plan for a high level of systems integration, and use organization integration techniques. Failing to follow even one of these rules can jeopardize a project. Success in AMT implementation does not naturally flow from sound manufacturing strategy or a wise equipment choice. It has its own process and logic, which have more to do with management than with the technology. Some common causes of dead ends and potholes are considered. |
