Abstract:The theme of this article is that firms should maintain an external strategic perspective. The authors examine the difficulty of defining the competitive arena and suggest that a practical approach combining multiple definitions with Porter's five forces model may help managers to break down existing preconceptions. Readers unfamiliar with the five forces model are directed to the earlier article. The objective is to help managers to break out of their existing preconceptions of what constitutes their firm's competitive arena.
