Abstract:Kanban is a simple mechanistic tool for tightly linking a material use point with its source. At least that is the impression we get from writings about kanban. But the apparent simplicity of kanban masks subtleties that are important in implementation. And kanban should not be treated mechanistically. Is has, in several forms, a human side. Without an understanding of this, those who study, design, simulate, install or operate a kanban-based system will be misled into pitfalls and execution obstacles.
