Abstract:Despite Gannett's exceptional record in advancing women and people of color to highly visible and important positions within the company, critics within the union have charged that those women and minorities not fast-tracked are not treated particularly well. This issue is discussed in depth in a 1989 salary study conducted by the Rochester local of the Newspaper Guild. The study found that for similar jobs and experience levels, men, on average, made 13 percent more than women; and whites, on average, made 16 percent more than racial minorities. These figures, while slightly better than national industry averages, appear disappointing for a firm that has demonstrated leadership on workplace equality issues. The company claims the study failed to adjust for longevity, but repeatedly declined requests for more accurate data.
