Abstract: | Many middle-aged CEOs feel they have been in the job too long, but fear the alternative - they experience the "blues". Manfred Kets de Vries explores the question of whether there es an optimum time for a CEO to be effective in the job, and if there is such a thing as a life-cycle for CEOs. Conceptually, CEOs can be said to pass through three stages while in the job - experimentation, consolidation and decline (the last might be shortcircuited by renewal). Advice is given to CEOs who find themselves stuck in the third stage and fearful of no longer being effective. |
