Abstract: | The Italian government bond market is the third largest in the world, behind the American and the Japanese markets. As of Novermber 1994, outstandings totalled L1,759 trillion. The market is dominated by government issues which account for approximately 86% of the total outstandings. The fact that such a level of public debt can be absorbed is largely due to the high per capita savings ration found in Italy - approximately 90% of governement securities are held by domestic investors. |
