Abstract:The east German economy is currently enjoying a strong expansionary phase. With annual GNP growth rates of almost 10%, the new federal states are among the fastest growing regions anywhere in Europe. On the other hand, this expansion is from a comparatively low base and is very largely being financed by transfers from west Germany. A competitive industrial base and an adequate research potential are necessary conditions if east Germany is to develop into a strong economic region.
