Abstract: | The key to the biggest military simulation ever was 3-D computing. Simulation in three dimensions are a cheap safe supplement to conventional exercises in a time of budget austerity. You don't have to work at the Pentagon to appreciate 3-D computing. It's prevading the civilian realm as well. Just a few of the fields expanding their horizons through 3-D vision: medicine, oil exploration, product design, and architecture - not to mention video games, advertising, and movies. While there's no good estimate of the overall 3-D market size, just look at Silicon Graphics Inc. SGI, the premier maker of 3-D computer workstations, has more than tripled its revenue since 1991, to $2.2 billion in the year ended June 30. |
