Abstract: | ISO 14001 is a new draft international standard created for corporate environmental management systems by the International Organisation for Standardisation. It is a critically important development in global environmental standard-setting because it brings together three different historical strands. In organisational terms, ISO 14001 represents a change in focus for the ISO from technical engineering standard-setting to the realm of public policy. Notwithstanding its name, ISO 14001 is not what many would call a "standard": it requires compliance to applicable laws and regulations, resulting in many different performance standards. |
