Abstract:Founded in 1872, Shiseido has long been Japan's cosmetics-maker of choice. But as Tokyo opens up the market to foreign brands, can the grand old firm keep its place at the top? As a teenager in a less affluent Japan, Fukuhara Yoshiharu loved paper planes. He would spend hours cutting up and folding old postcards and used paper, experimenting with wing location, body balance, lifting power and air resistance. The boy grew up to become a writer of business books, art patron, orchid grower - and president of Shiseido, the cosmetics maker founded in 1872 by his grandfather.
