Abstract:Business people working abroad are bound to encounter business practices that seem wrong to them. Should they apply their own ethical standards wherever they are or should they take a 'when in Rome' approach? There are some moral absolutes that companies must uphold wherever they are, but context and culture must shape managers' responses to ethical clashes. Companies can help managers by developing detailed codes of conduct, but, ultimately, managers working abroad must be prepared to exercise moral imagination. What seems wrong may just be different.
