Abstract:Japan's director foreign investment has been increasing noticeably since 1985, when the value of the yen began to appreciate under the effects of the Plaza accord. In 1995, Japan's overseas production ration, while still low compared with those of Germany and the United States, reached 10 percent. In the early stages of this period, direct Japanese investment overseas was channeled mainly toward North America, in an effort to allay trade fiction, and toward Europe, in response to the economic integration of the EC countries.
