Abstract:Japanese retail trade is undergoing dramatic change. That is in response to changing consumer behavior and ongoing deregulation. Consumers are becoming value oriented, a stance that aims at balancing price and quality. At the same time, they are trimming spending on daily necessities as much as possible while appropriating more money toward selective consumption. In response to these changes, chainstore operators are lowering selling prices strategically, and this, combined with the change in spending patterns, is further bringing down prices and making it difficult for retailers to increase sales.
