Abstract:This study investigates the impact of foreign ownership restrictions on firm value. A unique event on the Stock Exchange of Singapore (SES) simultaneously tightened and relaxes such restrictions. The author finds that imposing (relaxing) such restrictions reduces (increases) firm value. The author identifies some explanatory factors for the cross-sectional variation of the premium on foreign shares. Firm size appears to be an efficient signal for information availability.
