Abstract: | There has been an increase in global marketing over recent years, particularly within manufacturing. Faced with increased competition from foreign firms, many companies have sought to enhance their competitiveness by employing total quality management (TQM). This paper argues that the potential for TQM to enhance the profitability of companies is enhanced when managers are evaluated by using direct measures of manufacturing. The results show that the association between TMQ and performance was stronger where manufacturing performance measures (MPM) were used as part of managerial evaluation. For firms developing TQM capabilities the results provide support for the utility of developing measures of managerial performance targeted directly on manufacturing practices. |
