| Abstract: | The international success of industries depends on innovation, which in turn relies on efficient industrial research. This applies in particular to industries in high- wage economies such as Germany whose competitive edge is based more on high-quality products than on prices. During the transformation phase, industrial research in East Germany was in danger of total collapse. The process of collapse was combated by the provision of public funding, and thus at least the foundations were laid for a qualified rejuvenation of industry and industrial research in East Germany. |
