Abstract:One of the most profound changes in the structure of the British workforce since the early 1980s has been the dramatic growth in the number of people involved in small business, particularly the self-employed without employees. Another has been the emergence of the larger business in its new incarnation as a "down-sized", work intensified, externally sourced, "anorexic" organisation. However, these two processes are becoming increasingly inter-twined, with the larger organisation searching for "leanness".
