Abstract:Information technology has a great influence on how organizations operate and compete. The array of emerging technologies in the dynamic external information technology environment continues to grow at an accelerating rate. Many organizations have shifted from using information technology only to provide operational support to using information technology resources in the formulation, execution, and control of strategic plans and objectives. This paper describes the characteristics of the scanning process by which organizations obtain information from the external information technology environment about emerging trends and technologies, and provides valuable insights about information technology scanning for researchers and practitioners.
