| Abstract: | This paper summarises a modest attempt to "operationalise" the concept of sustainable development. The public environmental policies and reports of a handful of leaders in two sectors were qualitatively benchmarked against a set of sustainable development criteria. The evaluation considered what firms commit to do or say they are doing, based on their public corporate environmental policies and reports. The evaluation showed that, while leading firms are making substantial commitments to sustainable development, the experience to date varies greatly. |
