Abstract:In this lead article of special issue on tourism and quality-of-life, the authors, using a competitive framework, examine the ability of a tourism destination to contribute to the economic base and prosperity that provides the foundation for the multi-faceted concept of QOL. They argue that, whereas the economic base is essential to support environmental stewardship, the ability of a destination to provide a high standard of living (i.e. QOL) for residents should be the primary concern of a destination.
