Abstract:Stakeholder theory hinges on appeals to management to do the right thing, either in the interests of long-term profitability, or to simply be virtuous. The article answers whether stakeholder rights can really hinge on loose notions of voluntarism within a neo-liberal orthodoxy. The paper answers if it should be done more to entrench stakeholder rights in law; to provide an institutional framework in which firms are compelled to take stakeholders seriously. In this article, the authors explore the issue of stakeholder rights, why firms should take stakeholders seriously, and the feasibility and potential of "firmer" alternatives to the established "voluntarist" stakeholder model.
