Abstract:This article examines the origins and the growth of the supermarket in Britain. It focuses on a number of themes such as the American influence on British food retailing, and how the influences were modified by the conditions operating in early post-war Britain. The article puts an emphasis on the role of individuals, commercial associations and the state in promoting the benefits of self-service.
