Abstract:This article explores the ways in which public sector research scientists make sense of and develop their careers within their organizational, policy, social and cultural contexts. Both structure and agency and the relationship between them have to be discussed. The paper develops Barley's (1989) structuration model of career by drawing upon empirical evidence from the UK and New Zealand. It emphasizes the various institutional contexts in which scientists seek to develop their careers, and their characteristic modes of engagement with such contexts.
