Abstract:This article focuses on dealing with how changes of media through new information and communication technologies (ICTs) have impacted on practices of citizenship. It is shown how notions of citizenship are closely related to public opinion formation, and in turn, to be nurtured by journalism. In that regard the demise in newspaper readership is a worrying phenomenon. 'Cultural' citizenship is proposed as a sensitizing concept. It is concluded that ICTs do not necessarily produce new citizens. However, they do provide for new and important citizenship practices.
