Abstract:In Britain, the issue of social mobility has received significant political attention in recent years. One reason for that is the equality of opportunity policy emphasized by New Labour. This article provides new methods for measuring intergenerational mobility. It presents new cross-cohort analyses that can be related to earlier cross-sectional analyses. The results do not indicate significant changes in absolute mobility rates. In addition, the study argues that due to structural changes there is no political way to raise the mobility rates as high as in the middle of the last century.
