Abstract:This article looks into the formulation of pro- and anti-whaling discourses in British and Japanese newspaper reports. The paper studies the reports concentrating on their use of specific lexis, syntactic structures and rhetorical devices, and also the control and organization of information at a discourse level. The results of the study suggest that both British and Japanese reports aim to influence the readers' views on anti- and pro-whaling. However, the strategies for expressing stands on anti- and pro-whaling are different in British and Japanese reports: Japanese news reports tend to concentrate on factual content, whereas the tone of British reports is often subjective and emotive.
