Abstract:The efficiency of R and D depends on its correct organization but the different kinds of R and D will require different kinds of structure: that basic, innovative and long-term forms of R and D need an organic structure while applied research and development demand a more mechanistic structure. An economic model of R and D is outlined in which output is related by a Cobb-Douglas production function to autonomous external variables including technology. The conclusion is that the usual idea that all R and D should be done in an organic structure is over-simplified.
