Abstract:During the eighties Australia's financial markets have undergone a revolution that has transformed them from an isolated country's banks to internationally competitive institutions. The Australian dollar started to float, 16 new foreign banks were licensed and related moves have confirmed the liberalization. But the new banks have met strong local opposition. The old banks could control more than 90% of the total assets. The country is probably overbanked and the spectacular growth has slowed down. The old and the new banks have to rationalize their activities.
