Abstract:The purpose of the study is to test the merits of an integrated perspective derived from the two countervailing theoretical perspectives, the job characteristics and social information processing models of task design. The study manipulated two independent variables, the design of a task and social cues, as well as changes in those variables. The results provide clear and consistent support for the integrated model i. e. that objective facets of workplaces and social information jointly determine perceptions and affect. They are also consistent with many of the results obtained in earlier studies focusing on one of the above perspectives.
