Abstract:Described is a variation of the transportation problem that arises in the deployment of firefighting units and elsewhere. This problem is to assign firefighting units to fire incidents in order to minimize a function of the travel times. Its special nature results from the fact that, for any incident, the time of arrival of the first unit is the most important. Included is only one type of firefighting unit, but the model readily extends to multiple types of units.
