Abstract:An insight into the change of basic labour market parameters is presented. It is shown that the reservation of wages of both the unemployed and those on Youth Training Scheme (YTS) is clearly sensitive to the rate of support available from supplementary benefit or YTS allowance. Thus a more generous YTS allowance would raise the reservation wage of YTS participants and hence lessen the numbers who leave YTS before completing the one-year programme. On the other hand more generous supplementary benefit would make unemployed school leavers less likely to accept job offers. It is clear that an expansion of demand, and hence in the rate of arrival of job offers will drive up the reservation wages of school leavers.
