Abstract:Viewpoints from anthropology and political science are integrated to show that the information flow, on which managers rely for controlling the organization, is biased by the organization's culture; which reduces a manager's claim of being in control. Taking into account that organizations show an essential cultural pluralism, the authors aim at developing a cultural theory of organizations. A central role is played by information rejection, which can follow four different styles: risk absorption, networking, paradigm protection or expulsion. These can be related to different types of organizational cultures, in in particular to markets, hiearchies and sects.
