Abstract:The changing retail environment has brought problems for some traditional forms of retailing and indeed failures for some stores, but it has also brought opportunities, particularly for the store management that has been prepared to consider different ways of selling. The components of social, economic and technical change most relevant to retailing are considered as key influencing factors for both consumer behaviour habits and the retailers' response. Low price is no longer the dominant factor with choice, quality, exclusivity and service increasing in importance. Several key aeras are explored and their properties are considered. A strategy formulation procedure for retailers is described, and examples are presented.
