Abstract: | The interplay between enterprise restructuring and industrial relations is shown by the examples of British shipbuilders, Jaguar Cars and the Volex Group both during the 1979-83 recession and subsequently. All three case studies show managements taking a variety of initiatives to restructure the enterprise and to make it more efficient. That process many cause substantial cutbacks in employment. Collective bargaining was an important vehicle for negotiating but there were also instances where it was imposed, and where new policies and practices were introduces with a view to strengthening direct links between management and employees. |
