Abstract:Since the late 1970s, various commentators on the nature of operational research have referred to the correspondence between operational research and technology, and have suggested that operational research should be more appropriately understood as a technology rather than a science. The implications of taking the view that it is a technology have not been fully considered, however, and it is intended to take this forward. An argument is set out for adopting the view, first, that operational research is seen as a technology, and secondly, that the modern understanding of technology is more appropriate than the classical. The implications of adopting this model open some new and potentially valuable insights.
