Abstract: | A vehicle-routeing problem is concerned with devising tours to destinations. A specially written computer program is used to find an optimal solution for a problem with 38 destinations. This is thought to be one of the largest real-world applications for which optimal answers have been obtained. This is a pilot study to investigate the ease with which the problems facing the management of a local authority which has aims other than profit maximization can be solved and the benefits that follow. Therefore explicit consideration is given to the multi-objective nature of the problem. The objective is to minimize the total trip time and a reduction on the solution is achieved. |
