| Abstract: | The problem of scheduling jobs to minimize the total earliness and tardiness penalty is considered. A framework for this body of research is provided, simplifying and clarifying the existing literature, and delineating the current state of the art. It is shown how results have been generalized starting with a basic model that contains symmetric penalties, one machine and a common due date. To this base such features as parallel machines, complex penalty functions and distinct due dates are added. The main existing results on scheduling models with earliness and tardiness penalties are consolidated by proving general forms of key properties. |
