Abstract:In the UK the American model of human resource management is losing its appeal as attention focuses on developments in Europe. This makes one to reflect upon where HRM (human resource management) has come from and why it has proved so attractive. Insofar as HRM has its roots in North America, its origins and application in the USA is examined. The evidence casts doubt upon any assumptions that HRM is widely applied in the USA. It is limited to a small number of well-known cases. This raises questions about how we can reconcile the enthusiasm and the "talking up" with the substance. HRM is yet another manifestation of the American Dream and its attractiveness must be understood in this context.
