Abstract:A few important examples of operational practices in Japanese firms and it is suggested that horizontal coordination among operating units based on knowledge sharing, rather then skill specialization, is an important internal characteristic of Japanese firms. It is stated that Japanese firms depend on employee competition to achieve higher status within their hierarchies of rank as a primary incentive device. Then the financial control over Japanese firms is analyzed in a bank-oriented financial system. It is proposed that, as a result of this complementarity, the managerial decisions of Japanese firms are subject to the dual influence of financial and employee interests.
